For techno freaks everywhere, you’re in for treat at the Abbey Pub where the underground sounds come curtesy of Chicago promoters Kompute. Headlining tonight is Drumcell, one of LA’s biggest names, and from Canada DJ Mini, dubbed the queen of Montreal. Drumcell is the founder of Droid Recordings and co-founder of Droid Behavior along with the Vargas Brothers of techno duo Acid Circus. Graduate of the Musician’s Institute, Drumcell harnesses his musical knowledge with a strong techno intuition to push the boundaries of the genre with a funky minimalist groove. As Drumcell says himself, his music “is a sound born of musical menace and the kinds of wickedness that only the poisoned airs of LA can conjure.” Meanwhile, versatile young Quebecian Evelyne Drouin, alias DJ Mini, has hit the world of dance with her infectious minimalist sounds that combine space with rhythm and sometimes hauntingly beautiful melodies. Proficient at both producing and mixing, award-winning Mini is firmly established as one of Montreal’s leading techno artistes and has been resident curator at the legendary Parking nightclub and its Overdose parties that have featured guests such as Richie Hawtin, David Carretta, Boyz Noize, Felix DaHousecat and Ellen Allien. Not to be missed. From 10pm, $10, west Grace Street.

It’s dressing up time at Spy Bar tonight as the club celebrates its’ 14th Anniversary with a “Masquerade Ball” and the place is guaranteed to be jumping to the house sounds of DJ Sultan and Kalendar. From studying Mechanical Engineering to becoming a radio DJ, Sultan has certainly been down a road less ordinary, and when you factor in time spent in Kuwait, Cyprus and Egypt before adopting Montreal as his home town, you can see why Sultan has become one of clubland’s leading lights with solid, dependable, consistently groovy cuts that merge house with disco and electro undercurrents and beauitful soulful vocals. Currently working with Ned Shephard and Nadia Ali (of iio ‘Rapture’ fame), Sultan proves once again how consistent and creative he is. From 10pm, $20, free if attending in Masquerade costume.
