Stoked & Stacked: It’s All Vaudeville & Minimal This Weekend In Chi!
Despite all the crazy happenings going on around the world, there are times when you just have to stop where you are, take a deep breath and say, ”Thank Heaven for Dance and Thank Goodness for Chicago Clubland!”
Take a look at what’s on offer this weekend, and you’ll see what we mean…it’s nothing but stonking!
Friday, June 3rd
The Mid, north Halsted Street: Techno with the legendary Cajmere (aka Green Velvet and various others) who is still keeping it all “percolating” in his inimitable style and is always dependable when it comes to getting the party started…and finished…with some incredible grooves. He’s here tonight in a brighter mood with compatriots of time and place Paul Johnson (who’s 2004 “Follow This Beat” is still an all-time cracker) and the funky quirky jacking of genre-splitting icon Terry Mullan. John Simmons, Just Joey and Julio Bishop make up the night’s dance-creators. Not to be missed if you like it with quality. From 10pm, $15, in advance $10, free before 11pm with RSVP at clubtix.net.
Smart Bar, north Clark Street: Intelligent minimal techno with former drama-school-student-turned-dj Cassy of the Villalobos, Luciano, Steve Bug and Swayzak school, whose cutting her own niche very nicely indeed since turning her back on the acting profession…much to our delight! She’s joined by Chicago’s own Kate Simko, another star in her own light performing a live P.A./audiovisual set to showcase her debut LP ‘Lights Out.’ Tech-exponent Sasha Navarro lets us delve into her prized vinyl collection for starters. From 10pm, $15, before midnight $12.
Saturday, June 4th
Smart Bar, north Clark Street: Techno dubstep with the genre-defying Martyn, who was a bit hit at last year’s Detroit Electronic Music Festival and at Sonar Festivals. Chicago’s own tecchies Decimal and Chris Widman (one half of Quadratic) keep it all moving early doors. From 10pm, $13, before midnight $10.
Abbey Pub, west Grace Street: It’s Steampunk night at the Abbey courtesy of Joe Vourteque and his travelling Victorian punksters which means plenty of Vaudeville mayhem from Steampunk Chicago DJs plus Fusion-O-Scope music machine. There’s also punk blues from Hellblinki Sextet, Gypsy folk from Frenchy & The Punk, yodeling banjo from Curtis Eller’s American Circus, Harmonica rock from Duenow, as well as a spot of crooning from Eliza Rickman. From 8pm, $20, in advance $15.
