Giving It Up For DJ’s Sneak, Magda, and Houle…
Some great club action this weekend sees the arrival of Chicago legend DJ Sneak back in his hometown on Thursday, with Euro-Detroit stars Magda and Marc Houle stealing the limelight on Friday…
Thursday, December 16th
Former airbrush artist turned Chicago clubland superstar, DJ Sneak returns to the city for the night to remind everyone how he achieved such status as one of House music’s all-time premier icons. Puerto Rican-born Sneak arrived in Chicago in 1983 to become part of the second wave of influential house producers alongside Derrick Carter, Cajmere, and Paul Johnson after he had immersed himself in the club scene as a graffiti artist, which then led him into retail work before entering the DJ arena. However, realizing there was already a dearth of DJs vying for gigs, Sneak concentrated on producing…and quickly fashioned his own original sound. Noted for creating a new mix style called “filtered disco,” Sneak also revolutionized house by giving his tracks a heavy salsa/meringue/latin fusion and thereby sealing his sound with his own signature groove. Working with Cajmere, Sneak released a number of tracks that became instant classics including 1996’s ‘You Can’t Hide From Your Bud.’ His remixes take dance floors around the world to levels of climactic frenzy with his trademark booty-shakin, bass-heavy beats and rhythms. It’s little wonder he’s been a big draw at major dance venues such as Ibiza, Ministry of Sound and Cream. He’s here at Hearts from 10pm, $10, or free before midnight. Resident DJs Just Joey and DJ Hiroki provide the pre-Sneak warm-up. http://www.myspace.com/sneakthedj

Those who enjoy their techno/electro with a Euro-flavor will no doubt be raving that Polish-born Magda is in town tonight bringing her distinctive weird and challenging style, and minimally catchy and melodic groove to the Spy Bar dancefloor. A resident of Detroit since she was 9, Magda became drawn to the DJ scene in 1996 when she began working the underground circuit, and then entered the all-women DJ collective Women on Wax. From there she was invited by DJ guru Richie Hawtin to open his millennium show…and it’s all simply gone stellar for Magda since then. Now resident in Berlin, and just a few miles form her home town of Zywiec, Magda has become one of the most exciting DJs currently making things happen on the dancefloor with her utmost enthusiasm for creating music that sees her become fully entwined with the zone when she gets behind her rack of decks, moniotrs and fx controls. Inspired by her mother’s dark and surreal art, Magda’s sound is a juxtaposition of thick and warm swathes fused with jagges little hi hat patterns, giving rise to a lazy sort of melody that can also be clinical and expressive. Magda is joined by equally sublime Berlin labelmate Marc Houle. With Depeche Mode and Kraftwerk as early influences, it is easy to see where Marc gets his groove from to create his minimal techno. He should be called “DJ Prolific”, such is the original body of work to his name which makes no two sets ever the same when Marc gets up behind the decks. Also one of Hawtin’s proteges, Marc is a longtime pal of Magda’s from their time in Detroit so their sets tonight are guaranteed to please. $20, in advance $10 from clubtix.net, from 10pm.
