Ibiza, London, Stockholm, Amsterdam… all well known for their contribution to electronic dance music over the past few years and all places that have welcomed some of the top dance and hip hop DJs in the world in recent years. Well, Europe has had its go and now it’s Chi’s turn to welcome some of the top DJs of both the classic 1990s period and the modern era all in one weekend. With beats being thrown down left and right, rhythms getting your hips swaying and feet tapping, and plenty of events to choose from, why leave the city to get your fill of electronic dance music? There are many options for partying through from Thursday evening to Sunday morning, but here is the list of our hand-picked events that you should visit.

Thursday, May 17th

Spy Bar, North Franklin Street: Spy Bar is an excellent place to start this Thursday if techno is your thing. German DJ Loco Dice will be in da house from 10pm. Formerly known as DJ Dice’C on the hip hop scene, he made his name in New York and still has an edge that would be right at home in their downtown clubs. His artistry behind the decks is phenomenal and his unique bass beats will get the club pumping in no time. Supported by tINI and Wahi, this gig would certainly get your weekend off to a good start. It’s $20 to get in before midnight.

darkroom, West Chicago Avenue: In keeping with the past few weekends here in Chi, it wouldn’t be the same without some sort of anniversary so if you’re in a celebratory mood, head to darkroom. It is the place to be for Push Beats Two Year Anniversary. You are guaranteed to get abstract hip hop and bass beats from 9pm onwards and for just $10, or $7 before 11pm. Sweatson Klank will be putting in a special appearance alongside regulars Abyss, Zainghis, Raj Mahal, Cos and Illiac so it is definitely one to consider.

Friday, May 18th

Enclave, West Chicago Avenue: Dev will be putting in a shift behind the decks at Enclave from 10pm on Friday night, introducing her new album and making sure that everyone in the club will be dancing all night long. Bringing the bass, her club tunes will be a major hit with the crowd and set you up for a night to remember. Joining her, Outasight and Havana Brown will be providing vocals and giving every clubber a unique live experience right here in the city. The cover is $20, with every penny well spent if the reviews are to be believed.

Smart Bar, North Clark Street: Todd Terry is a massive name on the EDM scene, particularly in the UK where he made it big before even touching the dance scene in his native New York. Having been around since the 1980s, this is a man who knows his craft and his regular Ministry of Sound booking proves it. The legendary DJ will be accompanied by Bear Who? and looks as if he will pack the house before midnight. You can get a $12 ticket in advance but it will go up to $15 on the day so get in there early if Todd Terry would indeed float your boat.

Saturday, May 19th

Vision, North Dearborn Street: If Loco Dice and Todd Terry introduce the electronic dance music weekend then Bosnian DJ Arnej will be capping it off. A massive name on the European circuit since the turn of the Millennium, he will bring a little trance to the Chicago nightlife this weekend. Support will be offered by Chicago natives Mario Florek and RJ Pickens. The cover is $20 and will be worth every penny if the rave reviews from the other side of the pond are to be believed.

The Mid, North Halsted Street: Richie Hawtin, Funk Shui and Nathan Scott are ready to rock your world at The Mid this Saturday night. The cover is $30 but the beats will be pounding as the great EDM innovator himself, Richie Hawtin, takes you through until 5am. Techno DJs can be good but this dude is great, offering a formidable performance every time he steps into the booth. Many music writers have referred to him as legendary and if you do decide to head here on Saturday then you will undoubtedly get to see why.

With the moon out and the stars shining bright, it’s time to party down on Saturday night! Well, Thursday and Friday nights feature a huge amount of parties, clubs, and events booked for the weekend right here in Chi. There appears to be plenty of DJs and stars dropping in for a quick set this weekend, so there are ample opportunities to party like it’s 1999. Whether you like disco, house, art pop, Afrobeat, or just about anything that offers something you can dance to, there is something for you in this city. Check out your guide to just a few of your options for a good weekend. All you have to do then is count down the hours until weekend-o-clock!

Thursday, May 10th

Bonny’s, North Milwaukee Avenue: Head to Bonny’s this Thursday night if you want to sample “the stuff holding the nightlife together” according to the venue itself. Glue is on this Thursday night and will be bringing you house and disco all night long. It’s all about getting down and dirty with some of the most popular tunes around at the moment as well as some of the classic anthems that have made it into the annals of house history. With DJ Weaponry and Studio Casual at the decks, you can go deep into house for this one night only.

Friday, May 11th

Sound Bar, West Ontario: Sound Bar is the place to be this Friday night because it has a real party on its hands. Notorious F.I.V.E will be getting the party jumping all night long. Why? Because it is the fifth anniversary of NORDJs! Yes, the crew will be playing the main floor and spinning tunes that will have the entire club buzzing until the early hours. Even better, there are plenty of drinks deals on and a free cover before midnight or $10 after midnight with an RSVP.

Paris Club, West Hubbard Street: Graham Funke, the Hollywood circuit DJ, is in da house at the Paris Club on Friday night. He is completely unique and innovative, which is not that hard compared to other California DJs. Most seem to lack that edge and just fit the mold but not Funke. Funke has spun the decks for some of the top Hollywood stars including Will Ferrell and Marilyn Manson. With his individual flair and engaging personality, you are guaranteed a good night if you like something a little different every now and again.

Metro, North Clark Street: Maps & Atlases will be at Metro from 9:00 p.m. on Friday night. Supported by So Many Dynamos and Sister Crayon, the Columbia College graduates will be playing their Chi gig after appearing at Lollapalooza last year and taking it by storm! Their music doesn’t fit into any specific niche but does have a sound all of its own including Afrobeat guitars, funky percussion, and engaging lyrics. If you like discovering new bands or are just a fan of eclectic music, it may be the best $16 you ever spend.

Saturday, May 12th

Enclave, West Chicago Avenue: There will be a right Motley Crue at Enclave this Saturday night… literally as Tommy Lee graces Chicago with his presence. Drummer Lee will be making a special guest appearance alongside DJ Aero. Better known for rock music, Lee has reinvented himself as an electronic dance DJ and regularly tours with DJ Aero, achieving rave reviews from party goers as they go! If electronica is your forte and you want charisma combined with massive tunes, this could be the event for you.

V-Live, North Milwaukee Avenue: Adding a little European class to this week’s event list is Amanda Wilson. Playing at V-Live on Saturday night, the British singer‘s distinctive voice has been heard around the world as a part of the house music act Freemasons. Going solo for the night, she will be performing all of her hits, including “Seek Bromance,” “You Found Me,” “Love on My Mind,” and “Watchin.’” Alex Peace, Danny Boy, and Louie Loop will be on the decks in support, so plan to be partying until 5:00 a.m. and sleeping the rest of Sunday.

The parties just keep coming in Chi this year. It is safe to say that 2012 has been an amazing year for the nightlife of the city so far, with plenty of huge DJs, dance parties, and spectacular events having come and gone already. There is absolutely no excuse not to have had a good time so far, and yet another weekend is about to roll around. This Saturday, especially, is one to mark on the calendar because it is Cinco de Mayo! You owe it to this holiday to party like it’s 1999 and celebrate the heritage and tradition of Mexico. So check out the events that will have your feet tapping and your bottom swinging around the dance floor!

Thursday, May 3rd

Crimson Lounge, North Dearborn Street: Thursday kicks off the weekend with Commonwealth at the Crimson Lounge. Moving to a new night thanks to popular demand by its regular patrons, this night should the first of a good many parties in the Lounge to get the weekend into full swing. DJ Galuszka will be in charge of the decks and taking all attendees through sultry, hip, and deep underground sounds offering the full downtown clubbing experience complete with a little 90s techno, banging underground tunes, and incredible dance culture. A Chicago veteran, this event is definitely one to consider.

Friday, May 4th

Spy Bar, North Franklin Street: For a $20 note, or free with an RSVP before midnight, you can get down and dirty with M.A.N.D.Y. at Spy Bar. Yes, the owners of one of the biggest and best techno labels out there will be live right here on Friday night! The Berlin duo will be spinning the decks until the early hours, getting the crowd pumping and making sure the entire club is buzzing through tune after tune. Having played around the world, this stop in their U.S. tour is sure to be a major hit amongst the dance floor veterans. John Johr is opening so it’s guaranteed to be a fantastic night if techno is your thing.

Saturday, May 5th

Vision, North Dearborn Street: Cinco de Mayo wouldn’t be Cinco de Mayo without a party, well a Beach Party to be precise (capitals well deserved!), and Vision is the place to be if this is your idea of a good time. Hosted by Jersey Shore’s JWOWW, a fun-packed night is planned with a bikini competition, tanning packages, and plenty of prizes to be given away. There’s even a laundry service, believe it or not. Pair this with some banging tunes and it is a unique Saturday night that should be so much fun. If it sounds like it might float your boat, then check it out!

The Shambles, West Division Street: If a beach party really isn’t your style, then you could always look to The Shambles for a good party. House Party One will have Wicker Park rocking with house, progressive house, tech house, electro house, and other dance tunes pumping through the speakers all night long. It is literally designed to be a late-night party that welcomes all house fans with no cover, no dress code, and no “b.s.” DJ Overzero, Dash of Evil, and DJ Enkode will be rocking the decks until 5:00 a.m. so prepare to get jiggy wit it all night long!

Congress Theater, North Milwaukee Avenue: The Europeans are certainly taking over Chi again this weekend! U.K. born Rusko can be found making sweet music at the Congress this Saturday night. You can guarantee that the best of dubstep, skweee, and electronic will be bouncing off the walls all night long. With Sigma in support, the DJ and producer will bring his unique flava to the party, and his set will blow your mind. This is definitely one for the dub fans out there. Tickets are $28.50 or $75 for VIPs and are selling fast. So if you want to secure a taste of the action, then be sure to do so in advance.

There can be no denying that last weekend was a massive one in Chi with the anniversary of Sound Bar cranking up the fun and frolics a notch or ten. You might have been asking yourself how on Earth the city will be beating that, and it certainly would be a hard task were it not for a weekend packed with incredible DJs and yet another fabulous anniversary. This week, it is the turn of Dance Syndrome at Taxim to enjoy its 3rd anniversary and the party should be just as much fun as last week’s events at Sound Bar. The clubs will be swinging and the dance floors jumping. All you have to do is decide exactly where you’re going to get on down and it should be one hell of a party in Chi!

Thursday, April 26th

Neo, North Clark Street: Get the weekend off to a fabulous start and head to Neo on Thursday night. The Atomic New Wave Dance Party will be in full swing as of 10pm, with some vintage new wave mixed in with the newest tracks in the genre, all guaranteed to get you on your feet in no time if new wave’s your thing! Kamar and QBot will be in charge of the decks until 4am. With no cover before midnight and just $5 afterwards, it could be the ideal dance party to get your weekend rocking!

Friday, April 27th

Enclave, West Chicago Avenue: It is definitely the weekend to party in Chi with “the party to top them all” taking place at Enclave on Friday night, according to the website that is. It’ll be the very first Project X party in the city and the club has a really extravagant party theme planned to the very last detail. With over the top movie themes characters and decor, the experience will be in a world of its own… literally. A huge bouncy castle will await you and disco balls will be spinning while strobe lights give the dance floor a retro feel that will get your boogie on in no time. You could definitely do far worse with your Friday!

Saturday, April 28th

Taxim, North Milwaukee Avenue: Cool music, sexy beats and an eclectic mix of just about everything… Yes, there’s a party on at Taxim! It’s the 3rd anniversary of Dance Syndrome so getting down to Latin, jazz, samba, salsa, Afro beat, reggae, disco and funk, amongst other sounds, will be high on your list of priorities if you choose to attend. Patafunk, Nuestro Tambo and Soulphonetics will be in the house to see you through until 3am, with no cover before midnight and only $5 afterwards. Celebrate the Latin beat right here in Chicago and wish Dance Syndrome a very happy birthday!

Vision, North Dearborn Street: If Latin beats aren’t really your thing, you have plenty of other chances to party this Saturday night, with fantastic DJs and gigs left, right and center. Vision is definitely one of the top picks, with Wippenberg playing right through until 5am Sunday morning to help you see the weekend out in style. Tickets are $10 early bird, $15 for a pre sale ticket and $20 on the door to see the German DJ spin the club into a frenzy. His traditional club vibes have created a stir all around the world so it’s about time he did so here in Chicago again. For trance beats, this is your Saturday night pick!

The MID, North Halsted Street: Or you could choose techno instead and go to The Mid. The Europeans are truly in the house this Saturday as Sander van Doorn is set to take the decks by storm on North Halsted Street. With Nathan Scott and Gus Karas in support, the Ibiza and London club veteran DJ will be rocking. Having high profile remixes for Armin van Buuren, Robbie Rivera and Matt Darey under his belt, you can enjoy innovation and old skool all in one. Tickets are $25 so get your night planned before they are all gone.
