Light up the matches! World Cup fever hits the nation today when the greatest soccer competition on Earth begins in South Africa, and whether you’ll be celebrating a famous victory by the USA over England tomorrow, or commiserating their defeat, you can let it all hang out this weekend at a fine selection of clubbing venues…
Friday, June 11th
Just finished work? Looking for a little relax time before the hectic weekend of footie begins? Then make the jaunt to Nacional 27 on Huron Street for some early evening eats, drinks, and dance. Fridays play host to a regular Miami Nights event, which swings into action at 9.30pm with live percussion, followed by some clubby Latin House after 11. The cocktails here are said to be so good the music is almost irrelevant! The $10 entry sounds like a bargain to find out just how good the Nacional 27 is.
If on the other hand you have plenty of cash to burn, and fancy living the high life for the night, the Y Club might provide the lavish style you crave. $20 dollars gets you into what is described as a “distinctive environment for Chicago’s elite”. Boasting plenty of luxury, and panache Y is a stunning cocktail boutique. Friday sounds are spun by Billy the Kid and friends during a set entitled The Gallery, courtesy of Global Adrenaline & Surreal. Y opens at 10pm, with DJs maxing right through to 2am. If $20 seems beyond your limit – you could try getting in for free before 11pm by emailing rsvp@globaladrenaline.net
If you’re into emailing for cheap or free tickets, then try rsvp@boomboomroomchicago.com and you might find yourself gaining entry to Martini Ranch for just $5. The venue on Chicago Avenue gives you Branded:Jackmatic, a Friday night regular event supplied by Swing Shift, with DJ J-Dub, and friends such as Gene Farris, and Mark Grant. 10pm till late.
Saturday, June 12th
If you like obscure disco, then Danny’s Tavern is the place for you, when the weekly Disco Unusual Social Club will get you bopping up, and down in the round. Lono Brazil will be mixing the sounds from his unique multi-tracking laptop with an eclectic combo of dirty-disco programming. Entry is free at this west Dickens Avenue venue, and the grooves begin at 9pm.
Or for $5 you can join the Hideout ‘Life During Wartime’ Dance Party and tread the boards to live band sounds from British rockers Blah Blah Blah, and the Yawn, and DJs Bald E. & Mother Hubbard spinning a mix of electro, rock, and indie. 1opm till VERY late at the west Wabansia Avenue ‘roadhouse’.
But if you really feel like partying, you can dance all night at Evil Olive from 10pm until 5am! This west Division Street club has been running a year, and is still going strong with resident jocks Popstatic & Konsept providing the inspiration behind the decks. It’s fun all the way with their massive dance floor, 2nd story mezzanine, and 3 bars. Gotta be worth the $5 entry!
Sunday, June 13th
If you’re looking to go out for the third night in succession, but have discovered your weekend budget has dwindled a little more than you would have liked at this stage, then this selection of clubs might lighten the strain on the purse strings.
DJs Iz & Diz are providing the sounds for free at Spoon, on north Wells Street, as part of a new regular Sunday slot under their Bionic tag beginning at 10pm. If you are looking for something a little more chilled, then let Papa G be yer man for the evening with his roots/rock reggae vibes at Debonair Social Club on north Milwaukee Avenue. Starts at 9pm, for free. Or for just $2 you can go disco-crazy at the Smart Bar with top jocks Kid Color & Michael Serafini. This is a new weekly event for Sundays at the north Clark Street venue. 10pm start. Last, but no means least, if you get your sneakers down to Betty’s Blue Star Lounge on west Grand Avenue before midnight, you won’t have to pay $5 to get in, and you will be able to enjoy Real House Music courtesy of Sean Smith of Smooth Agent Records, and his exploration of the more soulful side of House. Guest spinners alternate weekly between Jesse De La Pena & Stacey Kidd. From 10.30pm.
So, get with the rhythm of South African soccer now, and dance the weekend away…
